I bought my unit over two years ago, it hasn't missed a beat, and changed the feel and characteristics of my lathe altogether.  Being able to vary the speed at the turn of a knob rather than fiddling with a key pad is a bonus to me and you can really see the difference in your turning as the vibrations you are forced to live with under a belt speed system, disappear. As for big pieces, well with the ability to still use the belts to reduce the speed even further, I end up with an effective speed range from 35 to 3000 RPM spindle speed.  I would recommend one of these to anyone looking at a cost effective way to add variable speed to their lathe
